it is a story of an enterprise counselor , who makes his living by carrying out layoffs for bosses who aren't daunting enough to carry on the task themselves.
he is a frequent flayer owing to his method of making a living by traveling to different workplaces throughout the united states.
he delivers motivational speeches to company executives using the famous analogy "whats in your backpack", ryan firmly believes that one cannot move forward in life if he carries the trauma of his past and sticking on to it. he believes that by being forward looking one can create wonders in spite of having pitfalls in your past .
he meets in one of his flights alex, a woman who also turns out to be frequent flying executive. soon they begin to have a casual relationship that grows over time.
while in his visit to nebraska , he meets an ambitious coworker natalie who is of the opinions that bosses can get their layoffs online by keeping the employees grounded. ryan however is of a different opinion , while natalie tries hard to figure out ryans philosophy behind his actions. she is slowly convinced of his actions , since firing cannot be done online and face to face firings serve effective means to get layoffs done.
natalie and ryan are then later convinced of the online layoffs as a strategic means to cut costs.
they implement this later on the plot follows on how they manage to win their strategies to serve as an effective management
tactic.
